KKCC DEVELOPMENT FUND
In March 2004 Peter Williams wrote to UK Members asking them to support the establishment of a fund that would be dedicated to assisting the development of Kongoni Cricket in Kenya. The response was terrific with many saying how much they appreciated the opportunity to "put something back". The Development Fund was born.
In total the Fund has raised £48,920. Of this £20,000 was donated by a generous anonymous donor but the balance came from UK members in the form of lump sum contributions and/or annual standing orders.
How have we used the funds?
The UK Committee agreed in 2004 to help the Club in Nairobi by providing funding over the next 5 years in two vital areas:
The expansion of the Cricket Scholarship Scheme including:
The refurbishment and replacement of facilities and equipment including:
What have we achieved?
Colts from Nairobi have visited and played on the UK Tour each year since 2003 except for 2005 and 06 when visas were refused for reasons that are still not fully understood! Two of these Colts have /are playing for Kenya; Alex Obanda and Moses Otieno. Seren Waters is also turning in fine performances for the national team. No Colt came in 2009 as Nairobi was unable to recommend anyone of the required standard. Day to day running costs for the Colts has also been paid.
Several coaches have visited Nairobi and conducted courses. A full time qualified Colts Coach and Team Manager has been appointed and his salary is paid by The Development Fund.
Bats, boots, caps and club shirts have been sent to Nairobi.
The nets have been fully re-furbished and a new additional concrete strip provided.
Two new sight screens have been erected. One of a similar type to that at Lord‟ Cricket Ground that enables spectators to be behind the screen but not visible to the batsman, this being a condition of Nairobi Club.
Several items of equipment, including a pitch mower, have been provided.
(Note: The Development Fund only pays 60% of all equipment, nets and sight screen costs).
"With the enormous and generous support of the UK members, the KKCC Development Program continues to grow. The Development squad recently won the NPCA T20 competition. In a recent review of the state of cricket in Kenya, the outstanding contribution of the KKCC development program was recognized, and we have attracted the services of Martin Suji, one of Kenya’s pre-eminent cricketers of the past decade. We must continue to build on this wonderful foundation" Phil Toye KKCC Chairman
What are our aims for the future?
The UK Committee would like to continue its assistance to the Club in Nairobi.
Current funds available amount to £14,900. Current rate of expenditure is approx. £6,500 pa. To extend assistance to Nairobi for a further 5 years would require new funding of approx. £3,000 pa. Current contributions (mainly by way of standing orders) ceased in March 2009. A new programme of contributions commencing immediately is required to achieve a further 5 years of assistance to Nairobi which will concentrate on scholarships, coaching, the provision of kit for the Colts and the financing of the Colts on a day to day basis for a further two years only.
Funding Target
To achieve its Funding Aims the Club is hoping to secure donations and pledges of a further £3,000 per annum for the next 5 years
The Club in the UK has already assisted the Club in Nairobi in a number of ways in response to the success of its revitalized Kenyan cricketing programme. The UK Committee would now greatly appreciate UK members giving serious consideration to making additional contributions to the Development Fund to further this development.
