GOLF REPORT 2009
Our Meeting at Gatton Manor went off smoothly again but with several rain showers; not quite the weather we had enjoyed in previous years. However, nothing interferes with the concentration of Kongoni golfers and good per-formances were again recorded.
The Friday Meeting attracted 15 players and the day was won by big hitting David de Bromhead with 38 points. Tony Wright was second with 37 points and Brian Sennett (a guest from La Manga) was third. Much to everyone‟s amazement last year‟s champion golfer, Mike "I only play twice a year" Brawn, won the piga mingi. Some thought that this was a plot by Mike to get his hands on the bottle of Tusker whilst others thought that he should play more often! Nearest the pin was Joe Houze and longest drive was Stuart Eastwood.
Saturday 1st August saw 18 players battle it out for the Green Jacket. The winner was Johnny Wright with 36 points. Second was Brian Sennett with 35. Nearest the pin was Mike Phillips and longest drive Phil "Hit it as hard as you can" Davy. Derek Breed had an off day and won the piga mingi. Mike Brawn helped Johnny into the Green Jacket and very happy he looked too!Other golf saw The Kon-goni team of Tongue, Woods, de Bromhead and Wright win the prestigious Nyumbani Golf Day last April at Frilford. This is a charity based in Nairobi and run by Stuart Eastwood and others in aid of orphans suffering from AIDS. (see www.nyumbani.org ) and has been held annually for some years now. It is a major part of their fund raising and Kongonis have been glad to regularly support Stuart and his colleagues.
The Annual match against the KGS in late September was again won by the Kongonis team but we had to rely on two guests to make up the side of eight. A group of Kongonis visited La Manga as guests of the Breeds in early October and managed to tie the two day match against a group of expat members of The Club. An excellent result as we have struggled to beat them in the past.
Best wishes and good golfing.
Tony Wright
